From the Emerald City to Nettelhorst School
Halloween came early to Nettelhorst School when Barbara Robertson, Wicked’s Madame Morrible, visited on Thursday, October 18, 2007.
As Honorary Headmistress for the Day, Barbara gave the morning announcement (in a variety of amazing voices) and the Pledge of Allegiance, assisted by two of the students.
She then visited the 2nd grade classrooms where she read from the Earth Storybook (written by Wicked castmembers) and shared green tips with the children.
As part of the “green theme”, most of the student body dressed in green…some even had green sprayed hair. In one of the classes, all of the children wore green headbands that they had made for the occasion.
Before she left, Barbara autographed some Wicked posters and passed out “green tip” bookcovers. which the show’s producer had sent…one for every Nettelhorst student. What a treat!
Back to School, Tuesday, September 4, 2007
The bell rang at 8:50a.m., signaling the end of summer and the start of another exciting school year at Nettelhorst. After children were settled in their classrooms, parents mixed and mingled at the 5th Annual Butterfly Breakfast in our community kitchen. And of course, our terrific alderman, Tom Tunney, came by to visit as he does each year.
Farewell Picnic for Dr. Kurland
June 8, 2007 was a bittersweet day as Nettelhorst families attended a festive picnic hosted by the Nettelhorst Parent-Teacher Co-op. The weather was perfect….warm and sunny, as children and parents and neighbors gathered in the back play lot to picnic and play and laugh….and say good-bye to our wonderful principal, Dr. Susan Kurland, who is retiring. In her eight years at Nettelhorst, Dr. Kurland has turned our school into one of the finest in the city. We are so grateful for all she has done and will miss her dearly.
Elite Marathoners Visit Nettelhorst Students for 4th Year in a Row
Elite runners, in the city for the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, were delighted by the warm welcome they received when they visited Nettelhorst School on Thursday November 19, 2006. (more…)
Made to Order: The Hearty Boys Cook up a Storm at Nettelhorst
Students at Nettelhorst School had a real treat on Thursday, November 2nd when Chicago’s own Food Network stars, Dan Smith and Steve McDonagh, aka The Hearty Boys, were guests for the CPS annual “Principal for a Day” event. (more…)
